    Juan Caramuel y Lobkowitz born in Madrid. His Mathesis biceps of 1670 expounded the general principle of number systems with an arbitrary base b. Caramuel pointed out that some of these systems might be of more use than the decimal system.

    Cauchy died near Paris. Famous for his limit definitions of the concepts of calculus, helping to make the subject rigorous, he also worked in a number of areas besides real and complex analysis.
